He moved here to Peters Township with his wife, son, and daughter after growing up on a farm in Whitehall, Pennsylvania. This farm in Whitehall was owned and established by his father Jacob Simmons, after emigrating from Germany. Earl Sr. also purchased property in Sheffield, Pennsylvania, Warren County, where he planted Christmas Trees. Earl Simmons Junior took over the farm in Peters Township when his father decided to retire. The primary focus of the farm from the very beginning was to grow quality fresh fruits and vegetables for retail sale. In the early years, a large portion of the produce was sold at the Farmers Market in Pittsburgh. While Earl Sr. was still with the business he established a roadside stand along Route 19, in McMurray. Eventually a larger market replaced that, which is the current location on Route 19. Through the 70’s, a retail trade was started at the farm and a building was built for retail sale of fruits and vegetables. Simmons Farm has continued to attend the areas various Farmer Markets, including the original North Side Farmers Market. The Simmons family currently farms approximately 500 acres. The home farm located, on Simmons Road in McMurray, Pennsylvania, consist of 180 acres owned by the Simmons family and approximately 220 acres which is rented. The Sheffield farm, where Blue Spruce, White Pine, and Frazier Fir are grown for Christmas is approximately 40 acres. The family also owns 80 acres along the Ohio River in Portland, Ohio, where the growing season is 1 to 2 weeks earlier than in McMurray. Some of the crops are grown there to get an early start on the season, they are picked and delivered daily to the McMurray farm. Currently Earl Simmons Junior's sons, Scott and Robert, operate the farm with the help of their families. The next generation of Simmons is now learning the family business from the ground up.
